Voices of Note Spring Concert

Our music selections include a mixture of sacred and secular songs. The up-tempo, “Cantate Domino! Alleluia!” contrasts with the sustained sound of “Set Me As a Seal.” Music from classic composers is featured in two selections, “Hallelujah, Praise the Lord”, music adapted from Charpentier, and “Prayer”, music adapted from Bach. We turn to the gospel genre in “He Never Failed Me Yet.” The hauntingly beautiful “God of Wonders” closes out the first portion of the program.
A classic of the women’s chorus repertoire, “With a Voice of Singing” opens the second section. The folk song “I Know Where I’m Goin’” follows. “Rhythm Dance”, a selection by Kirby Shaw, has his characteristic vocal jazz feel to it. “Song for the Mira” is a beautiful ballad featuring the solo voices of two Voices members. “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” is a selection that brings the feeling of spring time, and aren’t we all ready for that. The beautiful “Over the Rainbow” with its close a cappella harmony precedes the final selection “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.”
In 1989, Dr. Joe Hegstad, director of The Heritage Singers, an active male chorus in the community, invited several women from the Minot area to join the men in several mixed chorus numbers for a concert that was being planned. Somehow the idea of the women performing a section of women’s chorus music on the concert came into being, and history was made. Those women formed the nucleus of the group that was to become Voices of Note Women’s Chorus. They did indeed find that they enjoyed singing women’s music and enjoyed each other’s company in the making of that music. And so the group was born. Currently, the group’s 35 members from a variety of occupations and interests have a common bond of the love of singing. Voices of Note annually presents fall and spring concerts, sings for a variety of community functions, performs at “Arts in the Park”, and joins with the Heritage Singers in the December presentation of “The Messiah.”
